LIMINAL

I heard the word “liminal” for the first time recently. It comes from the Latin “limen,” which means threshold. Liminality is the threshold between here and there, betwixt and between. It is the transitional space on the way to something else, a journey from the known to the unknown. In liminal spaces, the order of things is suspended. Things are not, and never will be, the same as before, but it’s not yet known what they will become.

We are living in liminal times. The pandemic has upended our lives; reality is forever altered. Liminality is all about uncertainty, the porousness of boundaries, and the promise of transformation and new possibilities. These images are my impression of liminal space. They express the confusion, discomfort, hope, and cautious optimism that I am feeling in these liminal times.
